Sino-Japanese crossover: the fusion of wood and weaving
The collision of cultures often creates wonderful sparks. What kind of stunning works will be produced when Chinese and Japanese designers meet and combine cherry blossom patterns with willow branches?
When a Japanese design team visited with drawings of cherry blossom patterns, the craftsmen came up with a bold idea: to weave the outer layer of the wooden box with willow from Linshu. After three months of trial and error, the “Woven Wood Storage Box” was born. The solid wood box features cherry blossoms carved into it, while the outer layer of willow twigs creates a flowing effect. It won an award at Tokyo Design Week and is now a popular souvenir at Michelin-starred restaurants in Kyoto.
This cross-border experiment is not only a reconciliation between wood and weaving, but also a fusion of Chinese and Japanese cultures, making handicrafts an envoy of cultural exchange.
